Providing EI Services to children with complex medical problems

Description

Children who spend their first days of life in a Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery (NICU) and those who have significant medical problems identified after the baby comes home from the hospital comprise a subset of the children in Early Intervention. The families of these children experience some unique challenges, and Service Coordinator must accommodate special circumstances: rehospitalizations, frequent medical appointments, interactions with multiple health care providers, and the presence of medical equipment in the home to name a few. Service Coordinators play a pivotal role in assisting families as they navigate these challenges and are first-line providers in supporting parents. This workshop will utilize a reflective case consultation format with small groups of service coordinators (5-10) to share and discuss strategies Service Coordinators may use to help parents.
