This course is designed to be an introduction to the Contemporary Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) clinical practice model and its application to the pediatric speech-language pathologist and occupational therapists. NDT is an interdisciplinary, dynamic, hands-on, problem solving approach used in the treatment of children and adults with neurological pathophysiological impairments. Intervention involves direct handling to optimize function in the areas of swallowing, feeding, speech production, and voice. Participants will learn how positioning of the body relates to the function of the mouth, as well as simple strategies to facilitate improvement of speech and language and feeding functional outcomes. Practical application of material will be presented through lecture, video clips, movement practicum and discussions. Course instruction method includes: lecture, demonstration, videos, group discussion, lab practice, and question/answers.
