Neurodiversity

Description

Neurodiversity is a concept that recognizes and values the natural variations in human brain function and cognitive processing as part of the diversity of human experience. It asserts that conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurodevelopmental differences should be understood as distinct ways of thinking and experiencing the world beyond just deficits or disorders that need to be corrected. The neurodiversity perspective promotes acceptance, inclusion, and the celebration of these differences, advocating for support and accommodations that allow individuals to thrive according to their unique strengths and challenges.

This presentation will provide an introduction to the concept of neurodiversity, emphasizing its role as a natural variation in human cognition rather than viewing it as a stigmatized disorder. Attendees will learn practical strategies for implementing neurodiversity-affirming practices in clinical care, including effective communication and tailored therapeutic interventions. Additionally, the presentation will highlight the importance of collaborative care with families and interdisciplinary teams to support the holistic well-being of neurodivergent children.
