Thinking Like a Clinician

Description

Mental Health clinicians and developmentalists are increasingly working together in interdisciplinary settings. As knowledge of child development grows, many mental health clinicians are bringing that knowledge into their work, and updating traditional clinical theories of how the mind works. Likewise, many developmentalists are working within a relational approach, and are supplementing their expertise in normal growth with an understanding of relationships and feelings. This workshop introduces developmentalists to three core mental health concepts - transference, the unconscious, and parallel process - that may be present in any therapeutic work. Understanding these three concepts can bring clarity to cases that persistently feel stuck or unsatisfying. Through case examples and group activities, the usefulness of applying these concepts will be demonstrated. Feel free to bring case material.
