Grief, loss, and stress management in a family are critical issues that can arise following a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in a child. This workshop offers an exploration of the impact of these issues on the family, in the contexts of culture, religion, race, and other variables. Participants will explore how to help such families access treatment services from the beginning phases of diagnosis, and even beyond 36 mos. Environmental, medical, and alternative therapies will be discussed and assistive technology addressed, as well as ethical issues and their impact on families and children. Participants are invited to enhance their practice by developing strategies in the workshop to work collaboratively with families through case presentation and consultation.
