Using Videos to Enhance Family Support

Description

This two-session training introduces program directors, coordinators, and their staff to the use of video-taped observations in daily parenting routines to promote child development and strengthen the parent-child relationship.

Video/recording parent/child interactions is one of the most effective ways to help parents see their strengths, as well as their challenges. Professionals in the family support field constantly hear stories of parents being surprised and amazed when observing and discovering how their children respond to the parents’ actions. This training offers the same introductory overview and basic skill development instruction in video intervention as the Developmental Training and Support Program. It reinforces the concept that observation is a cornerstone of early childhood intervention and family support, and staff skilled in nonjudgmental observation has a solid foundation for promoting child development and strengthening the parent-child relationship. This training uses video intervention to develop participants’ observational skills and insure their grounding in a strength-based, relationship-focused approach to their work with children and families.
The training involves learning how to record a typical parent-child interaction, such as feeding or play, and viewing the video with families during home visits to promote healthy, mutually satisfying parent-child relationships. It features facilitated discussions among participants on how video work creates opportunities to practice observation skills, use documentation techniques, and demonstrate intervention by inquiry. This training may be used to orient new staff whose programs already use video intervention (DTSP), or as an opportunity to launch videos as a feature of a program that has not previously used it.
