Description |
This training prepares staff to work effectively with teen parents to support the parent-child relationship while keeping adolescents engaged in family support services.
This training is designed to help staff that work with teenage parents who may be struggling to balance their own developmental tasks with their new or anticipated parenting role. The training leads staff through an exploration of
adolescent cognitive and social-emotional development in the context of teen pregnancy and parenting. Participants consider not only how the teen’s natural development is affected by pregnancy, but also how adolescent development affects the parent-child relationship, and plays itself out in home visiting and group services. Staff explore the influence of culture on a teen’s progress through the stages of adolescence, on many of the decisions she makes in pregnancy and as a parent, and on the nature of the parent-child relationship; as well as the powerful influence of family, friends, and community on the young parent. Finally, staff learn strategies for engaging the pregnant and parenting teen in the helping relationship at various stages of adult identity formation.
