Early Intervention and the Parent/Professional Partnership

Description

Parents attach to their children through heartfelt, core-level dreams. Almost always, these dreams are shattered by threatened or established childhood disability; so, parents are often grieving the loss of primal attachment dreams.
In that context, early intervention professionals regularly encounter intense denial, anxiety, guild, depression, anger, and/or fear. Such emotionally charged states often confuse, anger, flummox, irritate, frighten, and/or demoralize child-oriented/child-advocating professionals.
This workshop explores, defines, and addresses the dynamics of parental grieving in ways designedto help professionals constructively engage grieving parents and to help parents better understand their own processess with one goal in mind: improve the parent/professional partnership in service of creating an optimal socio-emotional environment that facilitates the successful early intervention of children with disabilities.
