Infant Massage Educator Certification is granted to participants who attend the entire four-day training class, complete required reading, complete a written, open-book exam and teach the infant massage process to five parents or caregivers and their babies. Exams and parent/caregiver feedback forms are sent to the Trainer for evaluation within four months after the training. The core curriculum includes,
• Introduction and history of Infant Massage, IAIM, and Infant Massage USA
• An overview of early infant development.
• A review of current research on the effects and benefits of touch and massage.
• A review of infant communication including infant cues, crying, and behavioral states.
• Promoting positive parent-infant interaction-introduction to infant massage as an attachment intervention.
• Massage adaptations for the growing child and special situations.
• Communication, teaching, group facilitation and lesson planning skills (to promote understanding, supporting and valuing parents).
• Marketing and promoting community massage classes.
• A review of guidelines for the use of oils.
• Participation in a parent-baby demonstration/practicum class - A major component of the training is the infant massage class for parents and babies, which is scheduled for approximately one hour on the second, third and fourth mornings of the training. The demonstration class enables participants to observe the responses of parents and babies and to receive guided practice in teaching the massage process.
