Description |
Common therapy practices with Autistic clients across fields often target social assimilation, AKA masking. With the rise of knowledge of The Neurodiversity Movement and The Autistic Rights Movement in clinical spaces, clinicians are shifting towards neurodiversity-affirming practice, instead fostering positive Autistic identity. However, clinicians are now faced with the task of completely reconceptualizing what therapy sessions and progress looks like. In addition, most clinicians are not Autistic and are likely to encounter some difficulties due to this difference in neurotype, consistent with The Double Empathy Problem. This 2.5 hour presentation will discuss key aspects of Autistic culture and communication to inform building better rapport, targeting self-advocacy and regulation, and fostering meaningful social connections for Autistic clients.
