Illinois Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing 59th Annual Conference: Partnering with Parents Panel: Collaborating to Maximize Potential of Children Deaf with Disabilities

Description

"When it comes to meeting the needs of children who are deaf with disabilities, partnering with parents is essential to balancing multiple needs to promote successful outcomes. In this session, three mothers of young children (EI, Pre-K, and early elementary) who are deaf with disabilities, all with serious medical conditions, will share their experiences and insights related to the challenges that come along with advocating for their childrens’ educational needs both inside and outside of school.

While the presentation is intended to be guided by audience questions, the panel will be prepared to speak on their experiences in:
1. Helping educators get to know the whole child
-Emphasizing how their child’s hearing and other disabilities can never be independent of each other
2. Priorities
--Shifting priorities when medical issues arise
--Balancing medical, work, and home
3. Meetings
-EI-to-IEP transition
-Evaluations
4. Resources
-What they wish they had in the beginning
- Sibling relationships
- Managing expectations related to their childs’ education

As a result of this presentation,
-Participants will reflect on ways they can more effectively partner with parents of children who are deaf with disabilities in order to help them achieve their greatest potential.
-Participants will gain a deeper understanding of and compassion for the way parents may have to shift priorities away from education at times in order to balance their child’s multiple needs.
-Participants will leave with some ideas for resources that might be helpful to share with parents of children who are deaf with disabilities."
