Illinois Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired: Retinal Disorders

Description

Retinal disorders are an important class of visual conditions that often cause severe visual impairment. There are a significant number of these disorders that can occur in infancy, and some are part of an overarching diagnosis or syndrome. In addition, many retinal disorders have accompanying ocular conditions or complications that may develop over time. For this reason, it is vital that families have a basic understanding of the medical terminology associated with these disorders so that they may have meaningful discussions with their child’s eye care team. This presentation will give an overview of retinal disorders, describe in detail the most prevalent of these disorders with respect to the birth to three population, and discuss important aspects of these disorders that should be shared with families.
