Augmentative and Alternative Communication for Students with Hearing Loss

Description

This course is intended to familiarize educators and therapists on what Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is and with the main components of assessment and treatment for AAC. Current peer-reviewed research articles on AAC in the context of use with DHH and DHH+ students will be reviewed. Participants will be given examples of AAC devices/software and see videos of implementation in therapy with children who are DHH and have additional disabilities or differences. Discussion will also include ideas for practical application of AAC use in the classroom with qualifying students for the purpose of improving auditory and spoken language development. Resources for how and when to refer students for a local AAC evaluation will be provided as well.
