Description |
Vacations are intended to be a time to get-away, relax and enjoy your family. When you have a family member who is autistic, has an intellectual disability or a physical disability this can make a seemingly simple trip to grandma's feel like a lot of work. In this workshop we will discuss how occupational therapy can support families in community transportation.
Two articles will be discussed (Goehner 2009), (Gordon, 2022) as well as group discussion.
In this workshop we will discuss how occupational therapy can:
*Prepare the family and child for the upcoming trip
*Assist the caregivers in tools to use prior to leaving
*Coach families on Tools to use during the trip to help their child maintain optimal regulation and prepare them for the unexpected.
While no two families are identical, the goal of this workshop is for the occupational therapist to leave with a toolkit for the families they service.
