Fussy Baby Management: An OT Perspective

Description

Course Description: This course was developed with the Pediatric Occupational Therapist in mind. Colic is a misunderstood diagnosis that affects about 25 % of typical babies. Too often parents are told “they will grow out of it” without giving any help for these overwhelmed families. OTs are uniquely qualified to treat these fussy babies and their families due to their background in development, sensory processing and mental health. This course will help OTs identify who is the fussy baby, learn assessment strategies to identify challenges with the unsettled baby and provide treatment strategies to help these high needs babies and their families. The course will provide an intimate knowledge of development beyond milestones, such as information regarding crying, babies cues, sleep patterns, state regulation, feeding, sensory processing and postural control. You will learn these components of typical development; the challenges fussy babies present and how to educate families to recognize these aspects in their babies to help them get through this difficult time.

Educational Outcomes: By the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
1) Classify 3 current management strategies used to treat Infantile Colic by PCP’s.
2) Identify at least 4 areas of development that unsettled babies struggle with.
3) Name 3 standardized tools used to evaluate the fussy baby.
4) Pinpoint 10 environmental strategies to help with high need babies.
5) Highlight 3 ways to work with parents of irritable babies.
