This workshop will be a discussion of the core deficits and symptomology of Autism. Included in the discussion will be issues in the areas of communication, self regulation, sensory processing as well as issues which may also be present such as anxiety, ADHD, sleep disturbances, and gastrointestinal disorders. Other observable behaviors such as restricted eating choices and repetitive behaviors will also be discussed. The wide range of 'severity' and the unique individuality of each person will be explored. Changes and implications in the DSM 4 to the DSM 5 will also be discussed. As the understanding of autism continues to develop and evolve, providers must be informed and experienced in their knowledge and treatment of children diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. An educated understanding of what we currently 'know' about autism helps the therapist provide more individualized, effective intervention. As Dr. Stephen Shore so perfectly stated, "If you know one person with autism, you know one person with autism."
