Illinois Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing: 58th Annual Conference: How CHS Youth and Family Connections Can Support You

Description

CHS Youth and Family Connections provides support, case management, advocacy, and information to families of Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing Youth by using Deaf Adult Role Models in various roles and capacities. In the book, Far From the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity, Andrew Solomon discusses the importance of youth connecting with others of the same identity. With this in mind, we will share our successful programming efforts and opportunities to partner with you to connect Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing youth and their families to resources and programming within the home, school, and community.
CHS Youth and Family Connections, formally known as CHOICES for Parents, has rebranded and grown to incorporate both Youth and Family programming for Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing Youth and their families, as well as the providers that serve them. As a result, we will share how we can support early intervention programs, schools, and providers statewide as they seek ways to enhance their services. CHS Youth and Family Connections offers a variety of FREE programming for youth and families, aimed at supporting language access, self-identity, and self-advocacy. During this presentation, we will review these and encourage attendees to partner with us to provide these services within their own organizations and classrooms as a way to support social emotional growth and empower both youth and their families.
