This presentation will discuss how to utilize multi-modal (auditory, visual, and tactile) strategies to promote speech and language development in babies and toddlers who present with sensory disabilities (low vision, blindness, deafness and hard of hearing). Principles of early intervention, including definitions, services, and teams, will be outlined.
Potential differences in speech/language (communication) development in individuals who present with sensory disabilities from birth through early childhood will be presented. We will discuss possible intervention activities and strategies, as well as make suggestions for targeting communication development through teletherapy. Communication expansion techniques, examples of routines-based intervention, and strategies for utilizing parent coaching will be shared.
