Illinois Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing: 58th Annual Conference: Auditory Training with SPICE: Nuts and Bolts

Description

After implementing the SPICE curriculum with three deaf/hard of hearing preschoolers with varying listening abilities this school year, I have learned a few tricks to using the SPICE in a daily and practical way. Implications for using SPICE and other auditory training development techniques in the classroom, home, and with families will be reviewed. Practical for early interventionist and teachers of the deaf with newly implanted/aided students.
In 2019, a colleague and I presented a breakout session about the importance of using an auditory training curriculum to develop listing skills for children developing speech perception skills. We gave an overview of the parts of the SPICE and what they were designed to do. We ran out of time to really show examples and get to the “nuts and bolts” of how to implement the SPICE once you own the curriculum. When we reviewed our breakout feedback, there were several comments wanting more information on the “how to” of implementing the curriculum. This follow-up session will provide the step-by-step procedures, give examples, and tips and tricks of how I implement the curriculum daily in my preschool classroom.
