Practical Strategies to the Implementation of the 2018 APTA Congenital Muscular Torticollis Clinical Practice Guidelines.

Description

The congenital muscular torticollis clinical practice guideline (CMT-CPG) was originally published in 2013 and was updated in 2018. A study of the uptake of the 2013 guidelines demonstrated a significant increase in the implementation of most of the action statements. However, barriers to implementation were identified including lack of awareness, resistance to change, difficulty using measurement tools, and the length/complexity of the document. Three strategies were identified as being most helpful for implementation including a parent brochure, standard documentation, and education on how to perform specific tests and measures. This course will use knowledge translation strategies to allow participants to overcome implementation barriers when translating the 2018 CMT-CPG into practice.
The 2018 CMT-CPG action items will be reviewed. Algorithms developed by clinicians in our hospital will be shared. Handouts developed to educate referring physicians and parents will be provided. Videos case reports demonstrating how to perform specific test and measures will be used to educate the audience on these methods. Standardized documentation of the evaluation and treatment of children with CMT used in our clinic will be shared. Finally, video case reports will be presented to practice using the knowledge translation tools with individual patients.
