The Challenges of Outpatient Management of Childhood Feeding and Swallowing Disorders: Mark Fishbein MD FAAP
The success of an outpatient feeding program is dependent upon the individual and collective expertise of feeding team members. Each patient provides a unique set of challenges that requires a commitment to excellence particularly in a tertiary care environment. Adequate assessment, goals, collaboration, and follow-up are necessary and will be emphasized during presentation.
Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to -
1) Explain the role of a tertiary care provider in the setting of feeding and swallowing disorder.
2) Discuss the importance of performing a feeding evaluation prior to diagnostic study.
3) Explain the role of collaboration among therapists and other care providers including psychologists and physicians.

Aerodigestive Clinic & Its Role in the Management of Dysphagia: Taher Valika MD
Dysphagia can be a challenging diagnosis and requires multiple visits to the hospital to see multiple providers. This presentation will dive deeper into the aspects of the multidisciplinary aerodigestive clinic and how it can provide an advantage to many families. We will briefly discuss the diagnoses commonly encountered and the multidisciplinary factors which are essential for optimizing patient success.
Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to -
1) Identify and discuss the specialties which encompass a multidisciplinary aerodigestive clinic.
2) Identify diagnoses encountered in an aerodigestive clinic.

Fussy Baby Management: Patti Ideran OTR/L CEIM
Fussy babies and feeding disorders do go hand in hand, however sometimes the fussiness and irritability are NOT related to a feeding problem, but more in regard to poor state management. This presentation will educate therapists on how to identify who is the fussy baby and who could benefit from intervention from an Occupational Therapist.
Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to -
1) Identify 3 assessment tools used to evaluate the fussy baby.
2) List 3 stages of soothing.
3) Identify 3 strategies to assist with calming.

Systematic Thickening Weaning: Laura Henehan, M.S. CCC-SLP
Thickening has been utilized as a tool for dysphagia management in the pediatric population, although a clear method of weaning has not been described in the literature. This session will outline research supporting use of a gradual systematic reduction of thickener.
Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to -
1) Describe key features in systematic thickening weaning.
2) Reflect upon application of the systematic thickening wean process in the pediatric population, including indicators to initiate a thinner consistency, identifying when to discontinue, and communicating effectively with caregivers and other providers.

Putting It All Together: Case Studies & Round Table Discussion
Diana Bohm, M.S. CCC-SLP & Laura Henehan, M.S. CCC-SLP
Participants will synthesize content from morning presentations within case examples, and participate in group discussions surrounding collaborate care in the management of infants with feeding-swallowing disorders.
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
1) Identify treatment strategies for successful feeding with a fussy infant.
2) Identify treatment strategies for children utilizing thickened liquids for treatment of dysphagia.
3) Contribute to group discussions surrounding collaborate care in the management of infants and young children with feeding-swallowing disorders.
