Description |
This is a second chance offering for those who were unable to attend the live EI Vision & Hearing Conference.
This session will focus on an overview of pre-symbolic and concrete communication development, and unique considerations for developing multi-modal communication for young learners with deafblindness and/or those who have multiple disabilities and complex communication needs. The emphasis will be on family-centered approaches for supporting the development of communication skills with children aged birth to 3, including coaching and home-based functional communication interventions. Unique considerations for selecting, designing, and implementing child-centered communication systems for a diverse group of learners will be shared, and the session will include opportunities for interactive discussion. Additional considerations for distance and hybrid learning will be incorporated.
Objectives: Participants will increase their knowledge and skills in:
• Understanding the development of emergent and pre-symbolic communication in children with deafblindness and/or multiple disabilities
• Using and supporting families to use specialized, hands-on concrete communication approaches to expand receptive and expressive language and communication for young learners
• Unique, child-centered design considerations for tactile and visual adaptations to communication modalities for young learners
