Nursing Child Assessment Satellite Training II (NCAST II): Assessing Parent-Child Interactions During Teaching

NCAST II: Assessing Parent-Child Interaction is an evidence-based program for nurses and other health care providers interested in learning to promote positive parent-infant interactions which are known to enhance development. In addition to a review of infant states and behavioral cues, this course will prepare the participant to use the Nursing Child Assessment Teaching Scale. This scale is designed to assess parent-child interactions and is useful in early case finding of parents and infants at risk and subsequent intervention. Participants have expressed becoming more sensitive to parent and infant behaviors during interactions with families in their care.

Course Objectives.
1) Discuss the importance of assessing parent-child interactions in determining the health care needs of infants and families.
2) Accurately identify infant states and cues in the social context of a parent-child teaching interaction.
3) Reliably assess parent-infant interactions during a teaching episode.
4) Use normative data in the early case finding of infants at risk for developmental problems.
5) Identify interventions based on the assessment of teaching interactions.
