Join pediatric speech-language pathologist Laura Mize, M.S., CCC-SLP of teachmetotalk.com for this podcast, ASHA CEU Course #403 Teach Social Games First, for CE credit for therapists. In this course, you’ll learn one of the two most important approaches for the beginning treatment for a very young child with autism – teach social games first! But where do you start? There are five evidence-based reasons for introducing social games to very young children with autism and five questions for determining which kinds of social games to introduce first to ensure early success. When we introduce social games, we treat one of the core issues we see in kids with autism… difficulty consistently interacting with other people. We’ll use a child’s sensory information to select which kinds of social games will be most successful first. Don’t worry if you’re not sure what I mean – I explain it in the show!
Learn to:
Name 2 reasons/benefits for introducing social games to very young children with red flags for autism.
State the 5 questions you can use to determine which kinds of social games to introduce to toddlers and preschoolers with red flags for ASD.
Give one example for each of these categories of social games – movement games, lap games, very simple games, and songs with hand/body motions.
