Reviewing the Necessary Skills for Proficient DHH Readers: Are We Missing Something?
Research has consistently shown that children with hearing loss graduate with lower reading levels than their peers. This reality has not significantly changed in the last 50-60 years. If we as teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing seek to improve literacy outcomes for our students, we must understand what factors are associated with higher reading achievement. This presentation will provide a brief overview of reading research for both the hearing and DHH populations while highlighting the skills possessed by proficient readers. The research shared will cover skills developed in the birth to three population through high school-aged students. Participants will be welcomed to reflect on their own practice considering the suggestions of current reading research.
