In this course, we will explore the eight different levels of the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) and implementation of various thickeners in the outpatient setting. We will also explore indications and contraindications for various commercial thickeners in the pediatric population as well as thickening with other foods. Finally, we will also discuss populations at a high risk of oropharyngeal dysphagia, indications for modified barium swallow studies (MBSS), and interventions to promote safe swallowing using bolus management techniques instead of thickeners.
