Virtual Coaching for Tele-AAC

Description

Augmentative and alternative communication
(AAC) can be invaluable in helping children with
complex communication needs express themselves at home and in the classroom. However,
providing the appropriate speech generating
device (SGD) alone does not ensure successful
communication. Rather, the success of a communication interaction between an AAC user
and a communication partner will depend heavily on the skills of communication partners like
family members and school staff. Educating
communication partners can have a positive
impact on those using AAC.
This interactive, intermediate-level session will
introduce participants to the importance of parent and school staff instruction in augmentative
and alternative communication. During the
workshop, participants will review elements
found in successful communication partner
training programs, examine research regarding
the effectiveness of adult instruction programs,
see videos of coaching in action, and discuss
concepts and strategies of successful coaching.
Opportunities for coaching practice will be provided.
