Parenting, caregiving, and providing therapeutic services to families and children are all activities which involve maximum active participation and engagement. There is often little to no time for 'regrouping' : daydreaming, slacking off for rest, reflecting on ones own needs and wants, and tending to ones own needs and wants. The busy caregiver, parent and/or provider may slip onto the road to burnout when only focusing on the others' needs.
Yet, research shows that caregivers of all types are more effective in their work when their own needs are met, goals and personal missions are clear, and daily activities are in alignment with intentions.
In this workshop, providers will actively participate in self focused coaching activities which would also be appropriate for the family centered care provider to consider when providing services for families in the early intervention system.
It is not uncommon for parents who have children in the EI system to feel overwhelmed, challenged, and even at times fearful as they maneuver through the unexpected and uncharted waters of their child's development.
Actively acknowledging and supporting the importance positive self
care can make the difference between burnout, exhaustion, hopelessness and even confusion ..... and clarity, optimism, effectiveness and satisfaction. Through a series of activities, each provider will leave with an action plan for improved work effectiveness, some of which could be appropriately duplicated in supporting parents in being increasingly empowered in caring for and meeting the needs of their child.
