Description |
The purpose of this poster session is to present the findings from a literature review which examined the effectiveness of various nutritional and caregiving support interventions in improving oral feeding skills for preterm infants or infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD).
Preterm infants treated in the NICU are initially gavage fed with total tube support. Attainment of full oral feeding is a critical milestone for this population, but reaching it can be difficult for infants who have respiratory complications, such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). There is a clear need for effective interventions to promote oral feeding. As it is necessary for discharge, interventions that improve oral feeding could also decrease resource utilization such as reduced hospital stay. This review examined the effectiveness of various nutritional and caregiving support interventions in improving oral feeding skills for preterm infants or infants with BPD.
