Brachial plexus birth palsy (BPBP) can result in significant and chronic functional impairments. Treatment of BPBP focuses on minimizing the impact of the loss of motor and sensory function while maintaining joint range of motion and muscle strength. Clinicians have a critical role in assessing recovery and injury impairment of children with BPBP, which guides plan of care and influences follow up with specialists. Accurate completion of diagnosis specific assessments determines the extent of injury, assists with planning focused interventions, measures treatment outcomes, and has implications for determining candidacy for surgical procedures. Therapeutic intervention includes targeted exercises and home program instruction, positional and environmental modifications, application of therapeutic tape and orthotic and soft strapping devices to optimize a child's self care and play skills and exploration of the environment.Early assessment and intervention along with a multidisciplinary wholistic approach to care can provide the best chance for recovery and optimal participation in occupations.
