Description |
It is well-documented that strong connections with the families of children we serve are essential, yet many of us struggle to engage families, especially linguistically and culturally diverse families. Family engagement is intended to foster communication with parents about young children's development and collaboratively support learning. In order for ALL types of families to be positively involved in their children’s care and education, we must cultivate engagement is that is equitable, inclusive, accessible, and culturally competent. Equitable family engagement can include acknowledging and navigating cultural differences through communication and sensitivity, as well as overcoming other structural challenges or barriers. This workshop will provide an overview of equitable family engagement, including acknowledging and navigating cultural differences. In this workshop participants develop key knowledge and skills related to equitable family engagement, including how to effectively: accept and respect different cultural differences around communication and values; develop self-awareness regarding one’s own culture and values; understand how various factors influence interpersonal dynamics and experiences; cultivate connections through equitable family engagement strategies.
