Neuroplasticity and Development (Johnson)

Description

In the field of pediatrics, brain plasticity is well established as a foundation of development. Current research has established the importance of early experiences, ranging from social/emotional to sensory to motor, as key influences on brain development and functional skills including learning, memory, attention, and emotional regulation. Recently, there has a been flood of interventions on the market that purport to support brain development by harnessing the power of brain plasticity. It is crucial that pediatric therapy and education professionals use sound clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice to choose the most appropriate interventions that are cost effective and practical to implement for supporting functional outcomes that capitalize on the brain’s natural ability to change.

This one-day interactive course will review concepts of neuroplasticity, identify characteristics of the most effective interventions, and help participants choose interventions that are most likely to support functional change in children based on scientific principles. Current research on technology and “screens” will be presented as well as techniques for effective use of technology in therapy and how to educate parents on technology use. Practical interventions that focus on relationships, play, music, and movement will be presented with opportunity to experience activities that can be immediately incorporated into daily activities and therapy sessions.
