Regulation is Everything*

Description

This one day course will be an early intervention relevant 'excerpt' Wendy's psycho-educational program for therapists and parents titled "Regulation is Everything*." We will cover the paramount importance of one's ability to self regulate. In Early Intervention, we frequently discuss sensory processing and atypical responses due to a challenged neurological system. While typically the domain of occupational therapy and assessed through behavioral observation, interview, and sensory checklists, this training will go beyond the more typical sensory processing EI discussion.
Ongoing, advancing understanding of brain development beginning in utero and continuing throughout life has provided the neurobehavioral community an increased understanding of the powerful role self regulation plays in life. The goal of this program is to empower therapists to understand the complexities of developing 'comprehensive' self regulation in children, who will in turn empower parents who are facing the challenges of parenting atypically developing children.
Ms. Kolar's range of experience has gone from working to help children regulate through sensory integration strategies to studying and implementing approaches to working with with individuals of all ages to improve their ability to regulate emotions, thoughts, actions and physical responses These skills can make or break adaptive functioning, and are necessary for the building of resilience.
Self regulation is crucially important in creating and engaging in co-regulated relationships. Co-regulation is the hallmark of the positive parent-child relationship. Reflective awareness and therapeutic, relationship based mindfulness in caregivers are powerful tools to help foster optimal social emotional growth and meaningful communication in the developing infant, toddler and child.
This one day workshop will give participants an opportunity to gain insight into their own styles of coping and resilience and to understand what might impact the effectiveness of the parent-professional relationship. Through didactic learning, active group discussion and experiential learning, participants will learn techniques which have universal value in supporting regulation, whether for an infant, toddler, parent or provider.
