Maintaining Professional Boundaries

Description

In their work Service Coordinators regularly face the challenge of maintaining professional boundaries. For example, they may be tempted to offer unsolicited parenting advice, to question the professional opinions of providers, to “speak” for the parents during meetings and (while well-intentioned) to insert their (the Service Coordinator’s) concerns regarding the child’s developing skills into the IFSP. Service Coordinators best serve families when they are aware of appropriate boundaries and are able to reflect on the ‘trigger situations’ that pull them outside their professional role. This workshop will utilize discussion of fictional vignettes and roll-play along with discussion of cases on the Service Coordinators’ caseloads to explore this issue.
