Sensory Processing Disorder, Autism and ADHD Strategies (Couture-Wood)

Description

While the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder is identified as 1 in 68 children, 1 in 20 school aged children is established to be struggling with sensory processing disorder (SPD) or integration issues. With these staggering statistics, every clinician, therapist, or childhood professional will be exposed to this disorder in their career. Without an in-depth understanding of sensory processing problems, we are not able to provide appropriate treatment, education to caregivers/other professionals, and understand the impact this disorder has on the life of the individual who has it.

In this course, you will learn valuable information to set goals, provide home programs, and fully understand the impact that sensory processing disorder has on individuals with autism and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) as well as our society as a whole. Through interactive case studies you will take actual sensory profiles and clinical observations, and turn them into measurable goals. Participants will learn practical, easy- to-implement strategies to take into treatment sessions, as well as strategies for sensory management that impact behavior and sensory regulation in the classroom, or home. Upon completion of this course, attendees will go beyond the basics of sensory processing disorder in relation to behavior, feeding, classroom adaptations, reaching milestones, and addressing non-sensory goals, and learn effective self-regulation and sensory management strategies that are adaptable and effective. Attendees will be able to explain sensory processing disorder in every day terms, and understand why people “act that way.”
