Instrumental Examination of the Swallow: A Workshop for Speech-Language Pathologists specializing in Pediatric Feeding-Swallowing

Description

Speech-Language Pathologists use instrumental techniques to determine the severity of abnormal swallow function. These procedures are also used to determine effectiveness of treatment strategies and aide in the design of a feeding plan. Within this course, participants explored best practices in the use of instrumental evaluation for care and management of feeding within the pediatric population.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
1) Describe the difference between Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study (VFSS) and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES).
2) Describe patient characteristics which would determine referral for VFSS versus FEES.
3) Review results of an instrumental evaluation of the swallow and determine severity rating using the Dysphagia Outcome and Severity Scale (DOSS).
4) Develop an appropriate patient treatment plan based on results of an instrumental evaluation of the swallow.
