Treatment Approaches, Strategies, And Ideas For Involving Caregivers In Therapy For Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)

Description

An important part of the treatment process to support children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is creating partnerships between families and therapists. In this workshop, parents, speech-language pathologists (SLPs), and students of speech-language pathology will come together to talk about the journey from initial evaluation to treatment. Parents and SLPs often ask which treatment approach is the BEST for children with CAS. Evidence-based treatment approaches that align with the principles of motor learning will be described to help unravel the mystery of which program or programs are best suited to an individual child’s needs, including children with more complex communication profiles. During a portion of the workshop, participants can choose between one of two breakout sessions.

Session 1. Ideas for Home Practice
Families and caregivers are a child's first and most valuable communication partners. This breakout session will be focused on how families and professionals can work together toward the same goal of helping to give their child a voice at home and in the community. Participants will leave with new ideas for incorporating home practice activities into their daily routines, while considering family dynamics and specific attributes of the child.

Session 2. Dynamic Motor Speech Evaluation
This session will focus on learning a systematic way to complete a dynamic motor speech evaluation that will lead to an accurate differential diagnosis of CAS, Phonological Impairment, or Dysarthria. Case studies will be used to illustrate the evaluation process, so participants can feel more confident about diagnosing children with CAS.
