How Understanding One's Own Cultural Background Supports Effective Service Coordination

Description

The efficacy of relationship-based services is greatly determined by the strength of the relationship forged between providers and clients. In the Early Intervention System the Service Coordinator provides the first face of the program and remains a consistent advocate, source for resources and facilitator during the family’s time in EI. In addition to having good communication, organizational, and facilitation skills the Service Coordinator must be able to successfully engage parents who come from diverse backgrounds. Recent research and professional discussions suggest that reflecting on one’s own cultural background and one’s assumptions about culture and diversity are an important first step for supporting respectful engagement of clients who come from different backgrounds.
