Talking with Parents about Difficult Topics

Description

The work of Service Coordinators frequently requires speaking with parents about difficult issues, either directly or through the coordinator’s role of facilitating discussion between parents and providers. These topics include the child’s eligibility for Early Intervention, concerns regarding household circumstances or parent’s compliance (raised by EI providers), and complaints parents raise regarding providers. Addressing these issues (and other difficult topics) in a sensitive and responsive fashion is at the heart of good service coordination. This workshop will utilize a case consultation format with small groups of service coordinators (5-10) to share and discuss effective interactive strategies, e.g., ‘reflective questioning’, ‘paraphrasing other’s statements’, framing the discussion’, and ‘supportive listening’.
