Application of Segmental Principles for Training Posture Control

Description

This two day course will introduce clinicians to the Segmental Assessment of Trunk Control (SATCo) and discuss treatment strategies stemming from this assessment. Early research on the development of balance control and many clinical assessments of posture control consider the trunk as a single segment. The SATCo offers a precise analysis of postural control for children with developmental neurological conditions. Clinicians working with infants at risk for neuromotor deficits and/or treating older children with moderate-to-severe motor deficits will be able to utilize the SATCo for assessment and treatment planning following this course. The SATCo treatment approach not only impacts sitting and standing control, but also head control, feeding skills, speech production, as well as arm and hand use through gains made in trunk, head/neck alignment and stability.

Participants will be introduced to open and closed kinetic chain theory as a means of identifying and addressing postural control problems that impact the ability to demonstrate stable, vertical head, sitting, or standing posture control with or without adaptive equipment in play, self-care, and learning activities. Clinicians will be able to identify open and closed kinetic chains and to relate them to compensatory strategies used by children when control is compromised. Opportunity for hands on practice for set up and administration of the SATCo will be provided for all participants. Video examples will be provided as a means of recognizing and discussing common tester errors, compensatory strategies, and scoring of the SATCo. The clinical applicability of open/closed kinetic chains and a segmental approach to treatment for improved head control, feeding, hand use, communication, sitting, and standing will also be discussed.
