Helping Kids Become More Intelligible

Description

What do we do for the client who progresses well with drill activities in speech therapy, however demonstrates poor speech intelligibility in conversation? What causes the breakdown of intelligibility in connected speech and negatively impacts communication’? This workshop will discuss assessment of speech intelligibility and numerous therapy techniques to help kids become more intelligible. A few therapy techniques to discuss include: improving self-monitoring skills, increasing awareness. improving rate of speech, and decreasing frustration with not being understood by others. What changes to improve intelligibility can be made in therapy, at school, and at home for these kids with severe articulation, motor speech, or phonological disorders? This workshop will discuss how to train teachers and caregivers to effectively and positively help these kids be intelligible outside of therapy. Becoming intelligible speakers is so important for education, social interactions with others, and future jobs. Case studies and videos will be used throughout the day.
