Course Description:
This course will be based on Neurodevelopmental Treatment theory and focus on a holistic and interdisciplinary clinical practice model that emphasizes individualized therapeutic handling based on movement analysis, posture and movement in alignment, function and functional limitations and follows the child across the lifespan. Typical and atypical development will be covered to increase understanding of movement, encourage accurate assessment, be aware of sequence of components and synergy development and provide ideas for strengthening synergies. Treatment demos of children with neurological impairments and labs will be part of the syllabus. The course will be taught by Monica Blunier PT C/NDT and Saundi Pugh PT C/NDT who are both certified in NDT and Advanced NDT Treatment of the baby with 20 plus years of experience in inpatient and outpatient settings. This course will be appropriate for Physical, Occupational, Speech and Feeding Therapists. We are seeking Illinois Early Intervention credit.
Objectives
1. Understand the definition and history of NDT and its applicability to therapy today.
2. Review typical development of fine motor, gross motor, oral motor, sensory integration, feeding and speech in children birth through 1 year.
3. Identify how knowledge of typical development enables a therapist to efficiently evaluate and treat children with atypical development.
4. Discuss assessment strategies using task analysis, treatment planning, pre and posttests as related to each individual therapy session.
5. Be able to provide preparatory, simulation and practice activities to obtain optimal function in treatment sessions for accomplishing occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech/feeding therapy functional outcomes.
6. Understand the basic planes of movement, muscle types, and importance of alignment and postural control for all therapy disciplines to achieve optimal outcomes
