Helping Children with Autism Retain Self-Control through Communication and Social Skills

Description

When working with preschool children diagnosed or suspected with autism spectrum disorders, it is
important to address breakdowns in communication, increase age appropriate social skills and
decrease meltdowns resulting from breakdowns in communication and social skills. These are the
triad of impairments when addressing ASD. Therefore, this seminar will address each of these
areas, providing practical strategies for addressing and supporting these impairments. Structure,
predictability and routine will be emphasized. In addition, an overview of the grief process parents
experience will be presented to aid in understanding and to support parents during the early years
and beyond the diagnosis.
