Medical Diagnostic and Autism, One Family’s Perspective and Lessons to Share

Description

There are times when early intervention teams are hesitant to recommend a Medical Diagnostic Evaluation to families when they see potential red flags for Autism Spectrum Disorder. April is Autism Awareness Month and this workshop is designed to underscore the importance of early referral for families in the Illinois Early Intervention System. Part of the presentation will be one father sharing his family’s story related to his son’s medical diagnostic evaluation and receipt of the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Overview of current diagnostic criteria, the medical diagnostic process, early signs of ASD with emphasis on the “broader spectrum of what ASD can look like”, overview of the main recommendations and treatment options offered by the medical diagnostic teams, and the role of the Service Coordinator and other supports at the CFC level to better prepare families for the Medical Diagnostic Evaluation as well as provide aftercare and support post diagnosis.
