Reflective Supervision: Supporting Those Who Support the Family

Description

This training event is a three part series, and the audience is expected to attend all 3 parts as members of a fixed cohort. This introductory event will cover a broad based overview of the Reflective Supervision process, including it’s major tenants of Reflection, Collaboration and Regularity. Reflection on one’s work involves “stepping back” in order to broaden the view and see the content of the work from a new perspective. Together the staff member and supervisor engage on a collaborative effort that involves shared power, clear mutual expectation and free-flowing communication. Just as the staff member must achieve the phases of orientation, acceptance, shared understanding, agreement and accountability with the family, so must the supervisor and staff reach these milestones in the supervision process. Our focus will be on the parallel process, how to adequately support the staff in a strength-based manner, while working through concerns and adjustments to services by focusing on what is working, and why it is working. Supervisors will learn to model for staff the reflective, collaborative process that in turn can be carried forth into the work in the homes. We will also introduce effective ways to tie together all of the supervisor’s activities into a comprehensive and individualized staff support plan for each staff member, based on that member’s personal work style. Part of this process also involves the supervisor’s self-examination and assessment in order to help to determine the supervisor’s personal style and attending strengths and challenges. In this portion of the training, we will examine how to best support the staff’s work around Child Development Screening, Service Planning, Assessing Parent/Child Interaction, use of curriculum and solution-focused problem solving.
