Trauma Informed Care in Early Intervention: A Perspective on Feeding

Description

According to the American Psychiatric Association (2013), childhood trauma consists of any event in a child’s life that is perceived to be psychologically distressing.  This may include experiencing violence, perceiving threats of violence, or witnessing violence. Other examples include neglect, living through natural disasters, parental substance abuse or chronic illness. Additionally, children in Early Intervention may have experienced traumatic stress as a result of a hospitalization or medical intervention. Pediatric therapy practitioners regularly encounter children in homes and schools who have experienced some form of trauma. This talk will help practitioners to recognize signs of trauma and create supportive environments for a child’s development.  Additionally, participants will learn about the developmental impact of childhood trauma and specifically trauma related to feeding intervention.
