The Core Vocabulary Exchange System

Description

In this course, participants will be introduced to a low-tech, exchange-based communication system designed for a variety of communicators, the Core Vocabulary Exchange System™. This session will start off with an overview of typical language development and core vocabulary. The session will then introduce participants to the Core Vocabulary Exchange System™, discussing the reason behind its development, its features and functions, and the different communication users who will benefit from CVES™. The Core Vocabulary Exchange System™ has been designed to teach functional communication skills and how to communicate for emergent communicators. A variety of low-tech user areas will be explored, including larger icons for those with increased fine motor needs and more advanced options for intermediate communicators. Participants will review current evidence-based therapy methods used to teach language to individuals with complex communication needs. The rest of the session will focus on how the teacher or therapist can easily use the Core Vocabulary Exchange System™ either as a communication system or language teaching tool in activities they are already doing. Case study examples will highlight how the CVES™ can be used with individuals with a wide range of needs, followed by hands-on practice with the CVES™ Core Vocabulary Foldouts.
