Sensory AND Behavior: A comprehensive approach to managing challenging behaviors

Description

Aggressive students who don’t seem to respond to traditional consequences? Wrist-biters for whom no sensory strategy seems to work? Excessive outbursts for no apparent reason? Frustrated teachers and parents who have “tried it all” to no avail?

Day one of this innovative course will take an in-depth look at sensory modulation and it’s impact on behavior, emotions, motor skills, speech, cognition, and academic ability. Gwen will guide you through the neurochemicals involved in sensory modulation, and demonstrate the correlation between related disorders such as Bipolar, anxiety, ADHD, and Autism. You will gain insight into assessment options, learn to link assessment results to problematic behaviors, and use that knowledge to develop a sensory modulation plan to pro-actively meet the fundamental sensory needs of the children on your caseload.

Day two will go beyond the sensory realm into the exploration of the behavioral and cognitive frames of references to help you address those issues that are neither “just sensory “ nor “just behavioral.” Gwen will introduce you to a whole-brain approach to addressing challenging behaviors such as self-injurious behaviors, aggression, meltdowns, toilet-training, picky-eating and masturbation. This seminar will leave you with handy forms, intervention tools, a make-it, take-it project, and the knowledge you need to differentiate behavioral issues from sensory ones. You will learn to use a combination of best-practice, evidence-based approaches to meet the needs of your most difficult clients.

Learning Outcomes

The participant will be able to:
1. Identify the three types of sensory modulation disorders and their impact on behavior.
2. Select sensory strategies to effectively meet the needs of children in multiple environments.
3. Identify the roles of neurochemicals in sensory processing and related diagnoses.
4. Utilize a method of behavior analysis to develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
5. Recognize current cognitive and behavioral approaches and understand how to integrate these with a sensory frame of reference.
6. Create BrainWorks visual sensory diet tools to support children and teens in their daily environments.
7. Collaborate with other professionals to develop a comprehensive treatment plan to address the most challenging behaviors.
