Recognizing and Offering Supportive Interventions for Young Children with Early Characteristics of ADHD

Description

Young children are almost always described as active. As motor capacities increase, so can young children's activity levels. As early intervention providers, we can often see children who demonstrate significantly increased levels of activity and, at times, behaviors that appear dysregulated and make them seem "all over the place". Are these children at risk for a diagnosis of ADHD? How can professionals/providers recognize the difference from a very active child or a child demonstrating early signs of ADHD? How does sensory processing play into the behaviors and determination of what is being seen clinically? More importantly, what interventions can professionals offer families/parents that have an extremely active child?
All of these questions and the timing and planning for diagnosis will be discussed.
