Children with Social Emotional and attachment disorders have unique needs. Most early interventionists have learned, with great skill, how to support the development of children with more common developmental delays – such as in the areas of motor, language and self care skills. Many early intervention professionals, however, have not had focused training on supporting the development of children who are primarily exhibiting social/emotional challenges and/or attachment disorders. As much as these children with these challenges are not new to the world of EI, they are complex, and appreciating how to work with the families and the children is a continuous growth process.
This workshop will deepen our understanding of how to plan for and work with children with social/emotional challenges and/or attachment disorders and their families. A very careful, individualized approach is required for working with a child and his/her family and to best understand and meet their needs. Strategies for engaging the family in prioritizing and planning for their child’s needs and their needs will be highlighted in this workshop.
